The Art, The Craft, the Joy of... COSTUME!
Are you interested in Costume?
Do you wear, design, construct, study, photograph, display,
collect, or do you just like to watch the clothing go by?
Are you looking for other people in New England who share your interest?
Then join us!
Who are we and why do we do it?
We are the New England area chapter of the International Costumers' Guild (ICG), which is a worldwide organization of costume professionals and hobbyists. It is a non-profit, charitable, and educational organization designed to "promote the educational, cultural, literary, artistic, and theatrical advancement of costume design and construction, and the influence of costume (clothing), fabrics, and design upon societies and cultures." It is also designed to "promote public goodwill towards the costuming community and to provide a public forum for the discussion of costume, clothing, and other related subjects through publications, conferences, and other special projects." The ICG publishes The ICG Newsletter, which features articles on techniques, events, and items of interest to costumers. For more information, see the ICG's own website at www.costume.org.
Members of the Northern Lights also enjoy Costume-Con, the annual conference presented by costumers around the world for costumers and all about costuming. Costume-Cons provide presentations, seminars and workshops in various costuming skills as well as competitions for the best in the world of amateur costuming. For more information see www.costumecon.org.
Where can you find us?
Our members are scattered over the greater New England area. You can also find concentrations of costumers at regional Science Fiction Conventions like Arisia (see www.arisia.org) and the World Science Fiction Conventions (see www.worldcon.org). For information about the date, time, and place of our next meeting, check our meetings page.
Why do I want to join?
We keep each other informed about special events of interest including exhibits, costume competitions, and fabric sales – largely by email. We also provide peer review, host meetings, work sessions, field trips, and organize group costume efforts by our members. Membership allows you to join in the fun and be a part of an active, friendly network of people who share your interest in costuming.
